Dotty Blue’s Secret
I expect you know all about those magic pens and pencils. You know, the ones you
can never find just when you want one. Those naughty ones that always seem to draw
pictures in just the wrong place, but no-
Well, this story is all about some very naughty pens and pencils who live in a cosy mouse hole under the stairs in grandma’s house. There is Dilly, she’s a red pencil and the oldest of the family. Then there is Day Dream, she’s only tiny because she she hasn’t grown up yet. Now Dob, he’s the Dad, and he is very big indeed with a round fat tummy.
Mother, who is called Daisy, is tall with pretty red frills on her long grey dress. There are six children in the family, some take after Dob and look like pens, because Dob is a pen, and others are more like their mother Daisy who is a beautiful pencil. The naughtiest of all the children is Dennis who never seems to be able to keep out of trouble.
Once upon a time in the secret mouse hole under the stairs Daisy was making dinner when she heard a loud scream. Dropping her wooden spoon she ran out onto the first step to see what was wrong and who was screaming. Just as she reached the side of the step the scream happened again. It was above her, so she looked up, and as she did so, she saw all her children speeding towards her down the bannister. What fun they were having sliding , one after the other, all the way down from the top of the stairs. “Weeeeee,” squealed Dennis as he flew towards his mother, shooting off the end on the rail and landing right on top of poor Daisy who was knocked onto the floor with her son on top of her.
“Oops, Sorry Mum”, young Dennis called ,as he raced back up the stairs for another go. It was just like the slides that you see in a children’s playground only Daisy’s children thought it was much more fun. Struggling to her feet Daisy stood up and shouted quite loudly, “Quiet Children”. You know, they weren’t bad children, so when she called to them, they did listen and stopped their rides down the stairs to listen to their mother. “ Please go and play more quietly in the basement otherwise the people upstairs will hear you and we will all be in trouble. Why we might even get caught living in our cosy mouse hole, and if we do, the man or lady might make us go back into living in a box in their children’s room. Then you will have nowhere to play at all, so please be more careful and quiet, all of you.” “We will Mum”, they called as they all raced down to the basement through the plastic pipe their dad had laid between the two floors, and which he had hidden inside the old mouse runs inside the house walls.
As soon as they were all together in the basement, Dotty Blue, a very grown up seven year old, well she thought she was grown up, decided a game of Hunt the Rubber would be fun. Dennis was “It”, so he hid the rubber while the others counted to twenty before they went looking for it. They rolled, ran, jumped and fell about looking in all the silliest places for the rubber, until at last Dilly, jumping up and down, called out that she had found it. They were having lots of fun playing their game, but, soon became tired and a bit bored, so Dennis said he thought it was time for a more exciting game. “ Oh Yes, said Dotty, “ And what game are you thinking of this time Denny, and don’t say you want to play piggy in the middle with the marbles in that red box because last time we did that you broke a window and we all nearly got caught.
