The Adventures of
Smudge
Dreams Come
True
You've heard of
the Good Fairy in nearly every fairy tale, but have you ever
heard of Smudge, that well known Fairy Godmother of the animal
kingdom. For centuries Smudge has brought happiness to creatures
throughout the universe with her cheery nature, kind heart
and ancient magic spells. Sometimes it's easy to be a good
fairy, but other times Smudge has to pit her wits against
the most dreadful wolf wizards, and other disastrous events,
in her efforts to help bring a peaceful ending and happy beginning
to the lives of so many animals. In the following Waggy Tale
you will hear how Smudge was very nearly destroyed when the
most evil wizard sought to kill her and the gorgeous Panther
cub she was trying to help.
Leonie sat on the
log beside her parent's cottage weeping. She started with
a few sniffles, then gradually built to a crescendo of huge
gulping sobs. " It's so unfair", she sobbed, "Why
can't I be as pretty as everyone else. Why must I stay home
while everyone else goes gallivanting to the summer picnic
party. It's just sooo unfair", and she sobbed even louder.
Her crying could be heard all the way down the valley. Unfortunately
for Leonie the sound of her crying was positively music to
the ears of Habba the horrid old Hyena who hated Leonie and
her family. You see Habba and his nasty friend Teega the wolf
wizard had cast a spell which deformed Leonie's face so she
looked terribly ugly, and they had made their spell so strong
that none of Leonie's family could travel outside the woody
enclosure where they lived. This meant that all her life Leonie
had never been to school in the village, nor run and played
on the lush green grass with the other panther children, nor
had she ever even seen the lions den over the hill from where
she sat on her log. Though she had heard the lions calling
in play, and roaring, many times in her 6 years of life. She
wasn't even sure what a lion looked like since so far none
of them had bothered to visit.
Young Leonie looked
up with a jerk when she heard a loud explosion. She sat spellbound
as well as shocked for quite a few moments just watching the
huge billows of black smoke rising skywards. Then she shrieked
as she realised that the smoke was coming from somewhere very
close to the impenetrable barrier. With her heart racing in
fear for her family, she ran towards the area where the smoke
seemed to be coming from. She heard a lion scream, and then
the sound of a hyena crying out in terror. On she ran until
she reached the barrier. She stood on a large rock to see
what was happening. Below her was chaos with animals bumping
into each other as they moved, terror stricken, trying to
escape. "Escape what", worried Leonie. "What
caused that dreadful bang"? She looked first to her left,
but she could only see masses of creatures running hither
and thither. She looked to her right, but again she could
only see the chaotic melée of animals. "I'll have
to get higher", she told herself. There was a nice tall
tree quite near her, so she quickly climbed up to perch herself
on one of the thicker branches. Now she could see everything
below in all directions.
About 55 yards
away a small airplane had crashed, exploding into flame just
after it had landed. Sadly, the trees surrounding it had caught
fire, and the fire was spreading rapidly. Now, Leonie could
see a baby lion, a cub called Isobel, who had been caught
under one of the fallen branches. Isobel was screaming, both
because she was afraid and also because of the pain in her
trapped back legs. The branch had landed across her back just
above her tail.
